POST TITLE: LECTURER – IRRIGATION ENGINEERING
SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT: SCHOOL OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT (SOBE)
REPORTS TO: HEAD OF PROGRAMME – WATER & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Head of Programme, the Lecturer I responsible for teaching and monitoring of students as well as monitoring them on industrial attachment. Conducts curriculum review, internal examination moderation, and also assists in the overall development of the programme.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The key duties of the post are as follows :-
- Prepares lessons and/or training materials, delivers lectures and/or conducts practical field work and/or laboratory sessions for 20 to 24 hours per week.
- Prepares lesson plans, lesson notes, marking schemes, record of work and record of assessments for the subjects taught.
- Assists the Head of Programme in the development of the programme and participates in curriculum review.
- Conducts tests and examinations for assessments and keep updated records of student performance.
- Monitors students on industrial attachment to obtain feedback on their progress.
- Conduct research related to field of expertise, and publish findings in professional journals, periodicals, textbooks, and/or electronic journals.
- Facilitating departmental community engagement and outreach projects.
- Assist with administration of programme activities as may be prescribed by the Head of programme or Representative as delegated.
- Moderation of examination papers.
JOB SPECIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
PhD/Masters in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Agronomy Engineering, Agricultural Engineering or Water Resources Engineering, and an undergraduate degree in Irrigation Engineering or a related engineering discipline or Equivalent.
EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS QUALIFICATIONS
PhD/Masters in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Agronomy Engineering, Agricultural Engineering or Water Resources Engineering, and an undergraduate degree in Irrigation Engineering or a related engineering discipline or Equivalent.
EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Two years professional working experience, preferably in working with medium to large-scale irrigation infrastructure.
- Two years teaching experience in tertiary level will be an added advantage.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of irrigation engineering principles, including fluid mechanics, soil-water-plant relationships, and water resource management.
- Proficiency with hydraulic modelling software (e.g., EPANET, HEC-RAS, WaterCAD, WMS)
- Proficiency with Computer Aided Design (CAD) (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit)
- Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Global Mapper)
- Good communication skills
- Team player
- A strong passion for teaching and research
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
- Self-motivated.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Be able to work with students from different backgrounds.
- Be willing to supervise students in extra – mural activities.
