Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following positions tenable in the Ministry of Health.
JOB TITLE: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
GRADE: H
DEPARTMENT: MENTAL HEALTH
RESPONSIBLE TO: DIRECTOR MENTAL HEALTH
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Director. Mental Services. the incumbent is responsible for running the occupational therapy department, supervision of the O.T staff, rehabilitation of patients, observing and writing patient reports. Providing advice on patients’ mental status. Teaching students and non-medical personnel and organizing recreational activities for patients.
MAIN DUTIES:
- HEALTH EVALUATION AND PLANNING
1.1 Evaluates patients through the use of standardised assessment methods
1.2 Assess patient’s functional abilities. physical. communication, interaction and cognitive skills
1.3 Plans and provide appropriate therapy interventions /rehabilitation activities for patients - TREATMENT OF PATIENTS
2.1 Plan and coordinate discharge of patients
2.2 Develop treatment plans for patients
2.3 Guide clients in implementing chosen therapeutic modalities/techniques
2.4 Assist patients select and use appropriate equipment
2.5 Provide advice and support for patients family members and caretakers
2.6 Maintain records and case notes - HOME BASED MANAGEMENT
3.1 Develop discharge or treatment continuity programs for patients
3.2 Provide recommendations for assistive equipment. continued therapy and treatment
3.3 Provide advise on exercises that can improve patients mobility or dexterity
3.40rganising adaptations to patients homes or workplaces
3.5 Plan for further treatment and reviewing progress - ADVOCACY ON OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
4.1 Teaches patients, staff and health personnel on O.T. - MANAGES PERFORMANCE OF STAFF
5.1 Prepares the Annual performance plan for the Division.
5.2 Provides technical supervision of staff and coordinates activities of all units.
5.3 Monitor Progress and Mentor staff
5.4 Recommends for capacity building of staff
5.5 Appraise staff
JOB SPECIFICATION
BSc Occupational Therapy plus 3 months working experience with the mental patients or any patients
FOR WORK OF OTHERS
Supervises O.T. Department staff and patients
FOR PROPERTY
The job places the incumbent the responsibility to keep safely all Occupational Therapy department’s property. Takes inventory of supplies and equipment.
FOR EFFECT OF ERROS
The incumbent is responsible for errors that may lead to injury such as patients injuring themselves while in the O.T. department.
FOR SAFETY OF OTHERS
The incumbent has the authority for making decision and exercising initiative to plan and organize occupational activities in the Hospital
PROBLEM SOLVING
The incumbent is expected to solve work related problems such as conflicts between subordinates and clients.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The job places on the incumbent the responsibility to work under the supervision of the Director. Mental Health Services.
DEXTERITY
The job involves constant use of both hands. legs and neck as well as mental strain
CONTACTS
The job involves constant contact with Mental patients and machinery
EFFORT
Mental Effort:
The job requires the incumbent to do mental assessment and mathematical calculations for patients who are allocated on Occupational Therapy
PHYSICAL EFFORT
This factor is minimal in this job but, demonstrates physical work to clients
EMOTIONAL EFFORT
This factor is minimal in this job but. mental patients can be emotionally taxing to the Therapist
WORKING CONDITIONS
Occupational Therapy room is not conducive for the services and the equipment is inadequate
HAZARDS
Disturbed patients may harm themselves with dangerous objects. The incumbent may be assaulted by disturbed patients.
