Southern Mountains Association for Rural Transformation and Development (SMARTD) is an ecumenical community-based organization in the southern mountains of Lesotho, Ha Sekake, in the Qachaโs Nek district. The aim of this organization is to improve the standard of living of the rural communities through transformative development activities that emphasise indigenous knowledge of the environment and the advancement of climate change resilience and mitigation. Our scope of activity coverage includes organic farming; natural resource management; human nutrition education; food security; climate change mitigation; income generation; youth development; and livestock improvement.
Our programme will start a new project called โStrengthening the conservation and sustainable use and management of selected climate resilient PGRFA to enhance smallholder farmer livelihoods.โ The aim of the new project is to fight poverty and mitigate the effects of climate change through conservation and promotion of sustainable use of PGRFA materials among rural livelihoods. The new phase will cover a three-year circle from March 2024 to February 2027.

๐๐จ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ฒ:
Under the overall managerial supervision of the Director and direct supervision of the Programme Manager, the incumbent will assist in the implementation of the BSF-5 project related to plant genetic resources and crop-associated biodiversity in the context of maintenance and provision of ecosystem services in agricultural production systems. In particular, the incumbent will:
– Participate in crop and crop-associated biodiversity and in situ conservation.
– Assist in the preparation of documents and studies on issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity.
– Assist in the production of documents related to best practices for conservation and sustainable use of crop associated biodiversity and other agricultural biodiversity issues.
– Build and maintain relationships with farmers, growersโ industry, stakeholders, and government agencies to ensure effective collaboration and communication.
– Conduct market research to stay up-to-date on trends, demand, and supply dynamics in the seed market.
– Provide technical support and guidance to farmers and growers on best practices for seed production, disease management, and pest control.
– Monitor and control disease outbreaks in seed crops, working closely with farmers, extension agents, and other stakeholders to implement integrated pest management strategies.

Candidates should have the following: Diploma in Agricultural Science, Environment, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, or a related field. Three years of relevant experience in the field of sustainable agriculture and the environment.
