Graphics Manager
Manning Publications is seeking a freelance graphics manager to manage our graphics production process for our print and digital content. Manning is an independent publisher of computer books for software developers, engineers, architects, system administrators, managers and all who are professionally involved with the computer business. We pride ourselves on creating high-quality content, including effective, accurate, and professional graphics that add value to the pedagogy of our products.
Qualified applicants will have a background that includes extensive experience with hands-on graphics creation/production, in addition to significant project management experience that includes working with freelance vendors and authors.
As this is a remote, freelance position (averaging 30-35 hour/week), there is some flexibility in terms of schedule.
Primary responsibilities
- Manage graphics production workflow to meet schedule commitments
- Work with authors and development editors to create pedagogically effective graphics, based on rough drawings or textual descriptions
- Manage freelance vendors with focus on cost, quality, and schedule
- Communicate proactively and effectively with internal and external stakeholders (authors, development editors, copy editors, production editors, proofreaders, typesetters, and production manager) regarding graphic standards, formatting, scheduling, pricing, color correction, etc.
- Create/maintain style guidelines for graphics production
Required qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience as graphic manager for an established publishing company or large-scale publishing vendor
- Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator and Photoshop
- Basic understanding of standard editorial concepts, practices, and procedures
- Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to communicate well with team members and authors
- Superior organization and time-management skills
- Ability to manage tight schedules; our books are time-sensitive and often require a rush schedule
- Knowledge of different file formats (SVG, EPS, PNG, etc.) and file conversion
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Excel
Preferred qualifications
Intermediate proficiency in Adobe InDesign
- 4–6 years of experience as graphics manager, preferably for a book publisher
- Expertise in image/photo preparation for print products
- Knowledge of image/photo rights & permissions
- Knowledge of various freeware graphic software programs (Draw.io, OmniGraffle, etc.)
