Overview:

In Lesotho in particular, Jhpiego has been operating since 2012 through supporting the government of Lesotho in delivering health services to the Basotho people. Jhpiego’s portfolio currently focuses on HIV/TB and COVID epidemic response and includes a range of HIV and COVID-focused programming and research efforts, HIV (VMMC and PrEP), MOSAIC (biomedical HIV prevention including Dipivefrine Ring Introduction), THEBE (TB Contact Tracing and COVID Response), COVID-focused (COVID Case Management and Vaccine Support), CUT-TB (RCT) and various other small studies.


Jhpiego seeks a Clinical Data Collector to support implementation of the Cabotegravir and Ring Evaluation in Pregnancy (CARE PrEP) study in Lesotho. CARE PrEP is a multi-country clinical research study observing pregnancy outcomes for people that used “pre-exposure prophylaxis”, known as PrEP, during their pregnancy and their infants. Pregnant participants will be recruited from the CATALYST (Catalyzing access to new prevention products to stop HIV) study, which is a study seeking to understand the feasibility and acceptability of providing new options for HIV prevention. CATALYST involves introducing two new PrEP products for HIV prevention (PrEP ring and CAB PrEP) into existing health services.


Working under the general supervision of the CARE PrEP Study Lead and in collaboration with the Clinical Research Officer, the Clinical Data Collector will support recruiting and consenting eligible study participants, conducting study procedures with participants, and following all study operations to ensure accurate data and ethical treatment of study participants. This full-time position will be based at the study site in Maseru District, Lesotho and may require international travel for study-wide coordination. This position is primarily focused on clinical data collection and will provide supplemental support as needed for research operations tasks. The ideal candidate will have an obstetric background with experience in clinical data collection.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Study Lead, the candidate will be responsible for:

  • Develop/review and monitor adherence to country/site-specific operating procedures, including for data collection and quality control,
    in line with the study protocol
  • Participate in development and review of study materials, including informed consent forms and data collection forms, to ensure
    appropriate contextualization and accurate translation to local languages
  • Database testing to verify that questionnaire skip patterns, error checks, and programming are correct
  • Co-organize and participate in study-related training; coordinate and lead refresher trainings or training of study team throughout study
    period
  • Support training of data collectors on site, including planning logistics for successful study implementation
  • Monitor study progress (form completion; data quality)
  • Manage study data collection equipment, including the loading, updating, testing, and troubleshooting of electronic data collection
    forms; assigning equipment to data collection staff
  • Ensure that data management plans and equipment used for the study adhere to all local and contractual regulations (e.g., institutional
    review board, national data privacy regulations, data sharing agreements, equipment purchased is U.S government compliant
  • Ensure appropriate filing and storage of study documents
  • Ensure identification of and complete and accurate reporting of serious adverse events, social harms, and protocol deviations or
    violations according to IRB and protocol-specific requirements
  • Contribute to field reports for the CARE-PrEP Country Research Manager (CRM) on a regular basis and liaise with the CRM through email
    and meetings as requested to report on study progress and coordinate study operations
  • Work closely with the US-based data management team to ensure completeness and quality of data, including follow-up of data queries
    and discrepancies
  • Run reports, troubleshoot, and document issues
  • Participate as needed in data analysis conversations
  • Support program learning and research agenda
  • Support M&E capacity building activities with Jhpiego staff, MOH, and relevant stakeholders
  • Contribute to abstract writing for relevant conferences
  • Travel for regional protocol meetings and/or trainings as needed
  • Perform any other duties related to the program as assigned by the direct supervisor

Qualifications, Experience and Requirements

  • University Degree in Public Health,
  • Sociology, Demography, Statistics, other Social Sciences, or related field from any recognized institution. Master’s degree is an added advantage
  • Must have at least 6-7 years’ experience in data management, preferably in a clinical research setting
  • Experience in clinical research, public health with a focus on HIV prevention, maternity, and/or MCH departments preferred
  • Experience with data collection and management in REDCap or similar database system strongly preferred
  • Experience supervising research implemented using electronic data collection platform strongly preferred

  • Data collection, processing, and analysis skills
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and statistical applications
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Computer competency including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and
    PowerPoint.
  • Ability to effectively manage and work as part of a team
  • Non-judgmental attitude, humanitarian values, and ethics are absolute
    preconditions
  • Energetic, independent and self-motivated
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English and Sesotho
