This position is with the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), a global network of communications professionals in the field of climate, energy and nature. GSCC is a programme hosted by the Meliore Foundation. 

The People and Politics Team is looking for a Media Associate to join a growing team to diversify the kinds of stories on the climate crisis using a creative and storytelling approach. This is an exciting new role, and will focus on producing high quality print, broadcast and multimedia stories that prioritise a first person and solutions led approach to storytelling.

The Media Associate will be  part of the People and Politics team that looks to empower and amplify the communities and voices that are often underrepresented in traditional media and public discourse.

We are looking for someone with a high level of creativity, an innovative and experimental mindset, a good understanding of international media outlets and the ability to engage with editors and reporters, a strong grasp of new media trends and developments in the digital space, and sufficient knowledge of the climate crisis and its interconnected nature. This is a role for someone who has previous media experience including reporting, pitching and planning written, broadcast and multimedia stories. Strong writing and editing skills are a plus.

How you’ll contribute

  • Actively develop and implement a storytelling approach for climate stories  and new voices in collaboration with the team lead
  • Build and maintain a database of relevant  journalists with a focus on  broadcast and multimedia desks at key global and regional news outlets
  • Build and maintain key media relationships , be the focal point for these media partners
  • Leverage existing relationships with partners and voices to build story angles, pitches and an editorial calendar
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of agreed projects in collaboration with the People and Politics team, Operations and country teams 
  • Regularly scope new developments and emerging trends in relevant media spaces with a view to inform climate focused storytelling
  • Work with the People and Politics team lead to pitch other climate stories to relevant outlets including traditional press
  • Write, edit and pitch written materials as relevant such as op-eds, speeches
  • Act as a source of insights and contact point for the network regarding this area of expertise and key international partners where required
  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and reporting on communications efforts, as and when required
  • Any other relevant tasks as discussed with the team lead

Our ideal candidate has

  • Experience with journalism including pitching stories to news and feature desks
  • Experience in working with multimedia and innovative formats 
  • Strong writing skills in English for different formats and purposes,, other languages a plus 
  • Good understanding of the diverse ways in which the climate crisis intersects with other global crises
  • Good networking skills and strong networks in relevant media, creative, PR and/or issue spaces 
  • Able to work in a multicultural environment with people from all backgrounds and cultures
  • A a strong affinity to the organisations values 
  • A team player, is able to be calm in high pressure situations and able to work collaboratively with others in the network
  • Entrepreneurial approach, open to new ideas and has a learning mindset
  • A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change.
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
  • The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
