JOB TITLE: SUBJECT OFFICER – SOCIAL SCIENCES
RESPONSIBLE TO : SUBJECT MANAGER
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : PERMANENT & PENSIONABLE
Under the general supervision of the Subject Manager, the Subject Officer – Social Sciences is responsible for the development of assessment instruments, marking and grading of candidates to ensure valid and reliable evaluation of their performance. The Subject Officer – Social Sciences should strive for assessment practices comparable with regional and international education standards.
DUTIES
• Implements strategies aimed at improving the quality and credibility of assessment of Social Sciences and education as a whole.
• Develops Social Sciences curriculum content and assessment standards in collaboration with the National Curriculum Development Centre to establish clear and transparent performance standards.
• Oversees different stages of development of Social Sciences assessment documents to maintain quality products.
• Monitors different stages of marking and hence evaluates the quality of items and identify gaps in examiners’ Social Sciences content knowledge.
• Assesses candidates using valid instruments and contemporary assessment strategies that cater for different assessment needs.
• Employs equitable strategies to ensure effective assessment of candidates with special needs.
• Supports bench-marking initiatives in assessment of Social Sciences skills and other processes that are aimed at achieving regional and international recognition of Lesotho’s educational qualifications.
• Supports Curriculum Developers, Education Ocers, Inspectors and Teacher Trainers and Teachers on matters related to assessment of Social Sciences for harmonization of information and practices as well as fostering good working relations.
• Evaluates the impact of assessment innovations in the education system for appropriate remedial intervention.
• Supports assessment initiatives and other innovations aimed at improving the quality of the education system.
• Identies qualied Social Science service providers for the achievement of quality assessment and evaluation of learners’ performance.
• Ensures the alignment of instruction with assessment of Social Sciences in the schools and at the national level.
• Supports the implementation of marking and related standards to ensure valid evaluation of candidates’ performance.
• Assesses periodically the availability of Social Sciences markers and trains them to maintain a sufficient pool, for valid and reliable evaluation of candidates’ performance.
• Prepares for effective and efficient standardization of candidates’ performance and avail reports to inform the next event.
• Ensures familiarization with different stages of the examinations cycle to enable optimal performance and provision of support where there is need.
• Spearheads development of Travel and Tourism curriculum content and assessment standards in collaboration with the National Curriculum Development Centre to establish clear and transparent performance standards.
• Suggests suitable modes of assessment for SPS learners and candidates with special needs.
• Supports conduct of Travel and Tourism examinations at LGCSE level.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
• A Master’s Degree in Education with specialisation in social sciences, experience in examination cycle plus three years related experience in the field or a Degree in Education with specialisation in Social Sciences plus a minimum of five years related experience in the field
• Certificate in Special Education will be an added advantage
